No, students do not need to be Seventh-day Adventist to attend VHM Christian School. We welcome families from all backgrounds who are seeking a Christ-centered education in a nurturing environment. Our goal is to partner with parents who value strong academics, character development, and spiritual growth.

Where It All Started

Soquel Junior Academy was first started in 1920. A cabin on 7th Avenue served as the first school building. The school was then moved to Rodriguez Street, this eventually became Discoveryland Preschool. An enlarged building accommodated teachers.

In 1939, a small gym was built, this later became the school workshop. Finally in September of 1961, the present School building was occupied. A generous gift by Lola and George Hauselt, and extensive fund-raising, made this a reality.

The school was then renamed in honor of Virgil Hauselt. The Duffield's donated a staff home. A gymnasium and two classrooms followed. A grant from the Sundean Foundation allowed for increased property and staff homes.

Teaching Experience:
My journey in Adventist education began in 1997 at a one-teacher school, where I served in both teaching and administrative roles. Later, I spent 8 years at a K-12 school in various teaching roles in 3rd through 12th grade. I was then called to be principal at our sister school in Hollister for the next 4 years. For the past 15 years, I have taught 4th and 6th grades, developing a STEM program and a successful robotics program. As vice principal, I also worked on curriculum development and school safety policies.

I have taught in all grade levels from Kindergarten through 12th grade throughout my career as an educator, sponsoring overnight trips, day trips, and serving as an instructor during outdoor education experiences.

I deeply believe in the transformative power of Adventist education, focusing on nurturing the whole person – spiritually, mentally, and physically. I am committed to creating an environment where every child can thrive and discover their purpose.

I believe that all children can learn. They may approach problem-solving differently, but all children can harness their own strengths to learn and thrive.

VHM Goals:
VHM Christian School has a long history of strong educational presence in this community. It has fostered many lifelong friendships among children and continues to receive strong support from current parents and alumni. I am excited to be part of this amazing experience. Teaching is an art—one I’m constantly crafting and refining to make learning more engaging and meaningful for my students. My philosophy is

Teaching isn’t just about lessons; it’s about shaping hearts, inspiring growth, and walking together in faith.

It is my mission to see that each child does their best and to know that I’m there for them each step of the way. I have several goals as I teach: I want my students to feel loved, cared for, and to know that there is a purpose to what they are learning. I want them to learn to love Jesus more and more each day, and to know without a doubt that He loves them.

A Heart for Teaching, A Passion for Christ
I believe in making learning practical. I strive to teach as much as possible in relevant, hands-on ways that result in meaningful, useful skills. God needs young people who are on fire for Him and have the skills to effectively share His message with the world!

In the past, I have led Sabbath School classes for Juniors, Teens, Youth, Young Adults, and Adults. I have worked with Pathfinders as a counselor for many years and was a club leader for one year. I am currently an elder in the Campbell SDA Church and the head of the audio & video team. Having taught in both Adventist and multi-denominational schools, I have a great appreciation for the openness of SDA schools and the willingness to honestly address difficult topics. Students have the room to question, search, and grow in a nurturing environment that accepts everyone, regardless of where they are in their spiritual journey.

Some of my personal interests include flying—especially soaring in gliders—designing, building, and flying RC aircraft, exploring art in a wide variety of forms, working with robotics and coding, and hiking.

One of my favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 9:10: “To be wise you must first have reverence for the Lord. If you know the Holy One, you have understanding.”

I believe in helping students become productive citizens that are responsible and respectful. I feel this is done by setting an example for the students. As a Christian educator, I want to show them love, consistency, and fairness. I feel that giving the student a choice and a voice in their school experience is vital for their maturation. However, it also means giving them limits, rules, and consequences so they know what is acceptable and appropriate for our student body and their own lives.

My goal is to help students to get to know Jesus as their Savior and accept Him into their lives. I also want them to be able to share Christ with others.

What makes VHM so special?
I really enjoy the feeling of community and family we have in our school. I really love seeing kids light up when they understand a previously confusing idea or topic and get excited about it.
